November: Self-Esteem

The first character development trait that we are working on in leaders of the pack is self-esteem.  To help teach the girls about this, we first started talking about how we can build each others' self-esteem by saying kind words.  We put each student's name on a yellow sheet of construction paper.  Then, all of the girls went around the room and wrote a compliment on the paper around the girls name.

We also played a jolly rancher game.  To play this game, students would choose a jolly rancher.  Based on the color they picked, they would have to share a fun fact about themselves, something they liked about themselves or a compliment about the person next to them.  Then, we passed out balloons.  Miss Walburn would say either a put down or a compliment.  If it was a compliment, we would fill the balloon.  If it was a put down, they would blow air out of the balloon.  We compared this to our own feelings when we receive c compliments and put downs.

After working on giving each other compliments, we discussed how it was important to think nice things about ourselves.  We talked about the difference between bragging and having a good self-esteem.  The girls each made a brag bag.  This bag contains different aspects that they like about themselves.
